Any thoughts on adding a switch barrel in 416 Remington to an 8mm Remington 700 mountain from the custom shop? I'm wondering about difficulty, cost and recoil. Thanks.

it's a .323 vs .416... you can drive a 300 grain .416 as fast as an 8mil, and you can BET it's a better bullet.

so, how about a 416 rem and a 7stw? goats and hippos, oh my, from the same action.

Yukon,
A mate has the same rifle you have in 8MM mag and I have one in 375 H&H,I really would not like any more recoil than that, and the 416's I have shot in heavier rifles without a muzzle brake were to much for me.

You will probably need a larger barrel profile and I am not sure the stock will have too much fore end left when you relieve it to clear the barrel.
I do not think it would be any trouble to switch barrels with the the right tools but not too sure about the magazine follower and action rails ,it would pay to ask www.remington.com

what needs to be done here.Or some one else may be able to shed some light.
It may work out better to sell the rifle and just get the 416 and then have a switch barrel to something else.

Good luck,
Charlie.

There the same case. Just pin or weld the recoil lug and have the barrel made and fitted. The stock to barrel fit still might be a problem, Dont know how light you can or even want to go with a 416 rem mag.

Please, no welding on the receiver, you will drastically alter the heat treat. Use a Hollands lug, they are much thicker and stronger than the original lug, and come pre drilled for a pin and the pin is included. Just make sure the gun plumber knows what he is doing in pinning the lug.

Yes, you will have considerable recoil compared to the 8mm mag. Yes, the stock may not work. Yes, you will need the proper tools for switching barrels. Yes, you will have to sight in each time after switching barrels. The extra effort and expense required makes it simpler to have two seperate complete rifles.
