I started this project last Dec. with a wild idea about a half round/half octagon barrel. Mr Mark Stratton did his "Magic" and thus started the project. I can't say enough about Mark as he is a true craftsman and just a wonderful person to work with. The barreled action then went to Mr. Roger Kehr"Scrollcutter" for him to work some of his "magic" engraving on this project. Being only 30 minutes south of Roger made it rather nice and he also spent lots of time on the phone with me, mostly just Bs'n but none the less took time to keep me informed on the project. The floorplate still needs to be done but I have not got it yet and I'm still undecided as to the exact scene I want.
Both os these men are tops in there work and a great pleasure to work with. Many thanks to both of you.

Super Sweet, Jimmy!

Can you remind us what the overall project is to become? Caiber, action, barrel mfg and smiths involved...

I wonder if we could get a photo album started to save all the members custom work with documentation as to components and smiths and work done, etc???

Jimmy,

Thanks for posting the photos and the kind words.

One of the great advantages to being in this line of work, are the people you meet.

Jimmy, that looks fantastic. I've got one sitting at Mr Stratton's right now. Seeing what he's done with your's makes waiting all that much harder though.

Besides the game scene on the floorplate what else do have planned? When does a "semi custom" become a custom anyway? I think you've crossed that line.

Looks great

Jimmy, the rifle looks fantastic. much too pretty to use. I assume that you will put it up for the "future" when all the blue is worn of from fondeling it? LOL
Excuse this dumb question, but where did you obtain the barrel? I really ke the looks of the half octagon, but have never seenone offered in the usual places.
I like the under stated engraving. too often every surface is covered with some kind of scrashing that takes away from the beuty of the other metal work.
Any way, I am green with envy.

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

Forgive me if I jump the gun here and am wrong, but I'm 99.99% sure I'm right.

The barrel is from Mark Stratton, I would guess a Shilen since I know he has a real good supply of them, and he cut the barrel blank to what you see a reverse half-octagon barrel, usually the octagon would start at the action juncture and the half round would be on the muzzle side. A unique and good looking idea, and pulled off by the foremost octagon barrel maker.

Great work by both guys, I am looking forward to seeing how it looks once it is stocked.

I'm glad you all like the work, it was a little different from the design point of view. I know you can't see it from the photos posted, but the top flat of the octagon goes all the way to the barrel's cylinder section. I'm glad we did a computer drawing first to see what the barrel was going to look like before I started cutting steel. The design worked out very well. Dago Red is right, it is a Shilen match grade barrel.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys. This gun started out life as a Classic Super Grade in 338 that I hand picked for fit and finish and also the great wood. I had the gun for quite some time and then found another that I wanted more and traded it off. I then sold a wild custom mauser and got the SG back. It was at this point that I started dreaming nut
I talked with several members here about my goofy idea's and they all said to go for it. I then contacted Mark Stratton and asked what he thought and he said why not? He did have a bit of concern about the barrel and how accuracy would turn out, which was nothing to worry about as the gun prints 1/2" and better with factory ammo. Again, I thank Mark for helping to complete this project and his outstanding work.
Scrollcutter did his own thing and ideas, my only imput was the two gold bands and the upcoming floorplate, which is to be a couger. Roger has suggested using a Stainless floorplate and doing it in a French Grey finish. I also want to thank Roger for all his imput and outstanding work.
The caliber, another odd ball but one I have used for many years with great results
264 Win Mag

The wood may be updated as some point but I am pleased with the refinished SG stock at this point.
