Gunsmiths,
How many rounds would it take to burn out a barrel?

I have a S&W 629 Light Hunter revolver and am shooting it a lot with full 44 magnum loads and don't want to burn it out.

And what amount of rounds would burnout a 35 Whelen rifle causing it to lose it's accuracy?

Any Idea?

Thanks in advance.

The number of rounds through a pistol barrel will depend on the material of the projectiles, the velocity, and the powder used ... as well as the accuracy required.

I've had 38 Super barrels go in 18,000 rounds or so. Usually larger calibers will go longer.

Rifles are somewhat different and will tend to have a shorter life due to throat erosion when used with jacketed bullets.

Again the larger the diameter the better is the life of the barrel.

I'd be the rifle is good for 3500-5000 rounds or so if it is not being put to the maximum every round.
I too would be interested in the real experience of others.
