284 in a Remington Model 7

In a model 7 action, you would need to have the bullets seated deep to have the loaded cartridge fit in the magazine. This would negate all the advantage of the 284 in that rifle. Going with a 7-08 Ackley would be a better idea. The 284 cartridge really shines when it is necked down to 6.5 and used in a long action so the bullets can be seated out and you can take full advantage of the boiler room available.

yes, yes and yes. i second all of the above...............
althought the model 70 does make a nice platform as the magazine is 3.1.
also, i just finished a ultralight weatherby in 7-08 rechamber to 284. what a piece of cake.
standard length mag and just a bit of tweaking on the mag box. that's it. all the room in the world to work with......

Just out of curiosity........Just how much do you gain by being able to seat a bullet out farther in the .284 Win?? In so many projects like this, one continually hears about the advantages of "being able to seat the bullets out". Yet in actual performance whats it worth??

Personally I like the .284 Win and have a few buddies who did them on SA Rem 700's. Both with 24" tubes give basically .280 Rem performace with 140 and 150 grain bullets.

I too find it difficult to believe you will get any noticeable performance from seating bullets 'way out' to gain some very small gain in case capacity.
Would love to hear some feedback on this. I am keen to build a .284 or 6.5/284 and all this crap about having to have a long action really defeats the purpose. Interesting to see that the 284 has essentially been reborn in WSM and SAUM cases. Looks like .284 was 25 years too early.
I personally believe choosing a higher BC bullet will have a far greater impact than a tiny amount of extra case space. Take the 300 Win Mag as a classic example. Critics suggest neck is too short, and that bullets must be seated to eat up case space. Yet it is a very efficient cartridge.

I built one on a Rem 600 action, and modified the magazine and throat to allow 3.1" with some bullets, 3.0" with others. With a 23" Shilen barrel, I can get 3000 fps with 150 gr bullets. It gets the same speeds with Win factory 150 gr power points, so I'm not sure the extra length makes all that much differance, but it definately betters the 7mm-08, improved or not. - Dan

I punched out a 24" S/S 700 BDL in 7-08,to 284Win as a curiousity/experiment.

Despite mag box encroachment, performance was certainly elevated above what any of my other 7-08's could even think about offering(also Rem 700 and Model Seven based,so they shared like magazine box lengths).

I like light for diameter X bullets in everything and that includes the 7mm Clan. The 120XBT and 140XLC,offer most impressive performance via the 284Win hull, despite a 2.800" mag box.

Will be curious to see how much performance is elevated again, once I've dabbled with my Model Seven in 7mmSAUM.

While I am a devout fan of the 7-08,it is readily apparent to me,that the 284Win brings even more to the table. Whether that extra performance is "required",is up to the individual and his needs.

Long story short,I very much like the 284 in a short action Remington. It's 25-284 cousin even more so,but that is another topic..............
