i picked up a nice winchester model 88 last week and was wondering what year it was built, I think it should be a pre 64 but anyways the serial # is 5 digits and is 664xx

Cowboy, I am not real familiar with the serial numbers, but I believe all the pre 64s had real cut checkering and the post 64s had that awful impressed checkering that looked terrible. I hope that helps some.

The Winchester site states 1957. Search "winchester firearms manufacture dates" and click on the top pick (using msn.com). You'll go to the USRAC site and see everything you need to know. It takes about 30 seconds with DSL.
