I have two piece 'Redfield type'(the ones where the front ring twists in) bases on my Whitworth. How do the Redfield Q/R rings work? If not which Q/Rs do you recommend? capt david Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I'm not familiar with any Redfield "Quick Release" rings/bases. Didn't know Redfield had such a thing but then I don't keep up with all the latest stuff.

The Leupold QR's and QRW's are good set ups. The QR's only work with Leupold QR bases. They are hell-for-stout and reliable but the bases have a high profile and can partially block view of rear sights. The QRW's mount onto Weaver/slotted type bases and have a much lower profile.

A twist off EAW mounts are a European set-up. The front base is similar (~) to the Redfield, the rear one has a locking means on them. The rings can be pricey.

These three are the only quick release types I have experience with. There are others on this forum that can tell you of the other varieties.

Captdavid, I'm not familiar with Redfields product, but I have had excellent results with both Warne and Talley QR rings and bases. I have a Swarovski 4-12x50 in the Warne's and it has been on and off on a half dozen hunts and always is right on the money.
Just FWIW--

I've also had good luck with the Leupold QR rings and bases. Not aware of any made by Redfield, but maybe they do make them.

Redfield does not make a QR system.
Leupold makes their QR proprietary system which is pretty cool and sucks the ring tight against the base for a good consisten zero.
The Leupold QRW is also good if you like the Weaver-style but in my opinion the design does not hold as tight as with a permanent installation with a screwdriver.

Add pilkington levers to redfield scope mounting arrangements and you do indeed have a QR system. I personally don't like the idea, but many have used it with great sucess. Including our own Phil Shoemaker (458 WIN).

Chuck,
Good info as I wasn't aware about the Pilkington levers for the Redfield system.
Thanks,

Capt David,
Brownell's may have them, or go to Pilkington himself.. Don't know anyone else who may carry them. Neil Johnson? Maybe a search is in order.
Good Luck,
Don

I tried putting the lever on the Redfield rear base some years back. The Redfield front dovetail is not designed to removed and replaced. After a few times the metal wears and the dovetail is loose.

The EAW uses the same idea, except that the front base is adjustable for tension and the steel is better quality.
