30-0x to 308 Norma mag?
Briefly, what is involved with rechambering a Mark X mauser in 30-06 to 308 Norma? And what would be the approximate cost? Is it worth it or should I just buy a 300 win mag?

Joe,

You'll me much happier selling the 30-06 and buying a 300 WM. The 30-06 would need the bolt face and rails opened plus the re-chamber. The trick would be getting the fatter cartridges to feed reliably.

And still rechamber for the Norma; everyone has a 300 Winchester; I, personally, do not use anything that someone else will have. Has to be unique.

Plus, the 308 Norma is a much better cartridge for use in a Mauser than is the 300Win Mag. The same is true of the 30-338. The 30-338 is especially attractive because parent brass is so easy to find and form. Regards, Bill

I have a very nice 1903 chambered in 300 Apex which is pretty much a 30-338 Win Mag. I would sell it for a reasonable price. I do have brass and dies.

I hope you sell the 06 on the free market.

Then go to the LGS.

The free market is a great check valve against gun confiscation.

Plus one well be able to make a better deal with cash.

IMO your best beg if you hand load is the 30-338, its just about the best balanced magnum 30 out t here today..and an easy project..

It is what the 300 Winchester should have been. If they had introduced their 30 magnum before the Norma, they would probably have introduced the 30-338 as the 300 Mag. The 308 Norma was visibly larger though and the sales people wanted that size advantage to be on the Winchester side, so they brought out the short-necked 300 Win Mag. It didn't fit the magazine as well and didn't perform as well as the Norma, but it was bigger. Regards, Bill

Anecdotal info; years ago I found a beat up Mark X in 7mm Rem mag in the dusty bargain section of a small gun store. My local smith screwed on a new barrel and I had a perfectly functional 338 Win mag. Nothing else was required, so it can be inferred that the 308 Norma should do the same. Of course nothing is guaranteed in this world except for death and taxes.

It will work, I prefer the 30-338 as the best of the 30s for a reloader..and the .338 would be an option to consider for a rebore or rebarrel..just my two bits..
