About a year ago I bought what I though was going to be a dream rifle. An old FN 270. Well, I was in the middle of a couple of other projects and just got really looking at it the other day. Boy did I ever let my heart run away with my head. It is poorly drilled for the scope mount, BUBBA'd) the stock has been messed with, (BUBBA again) and the barrel is dark. I am not into it a great deal of money. Is there any interest in parts or all of it? I'll get some pictures taken if there is any interest. If not I'll part it out on Gunbroker. Feel free to either kick it around here, or pm me. DW

If it looks like an FN but isn't marked, and is drilled crooked, it may actually be a Yugo and may actually be the intermediate length action. I've seen several of these commercial Yugos that had been drilled or shaped crooked on the rear bridge, apparently at the factory. Hinged floorplate?

how do you get 270 FN commerical action down to yugo imtermediate? i haven't seen an intermediate COMMERICAL yugo action afore ....

Herter's J-9, offered at least from the late '50s to the later '60s, was an intermediate commercial Yugo with FN-profile receiver and bolt handle. All the J-9s I've seen have had the inside-the-bow release on the steel hinged FP and were properly shaped on the rear bridge. At about that same time some of the folks like monkey ward were also marketing these same FN look-alikes with lever-release steel hinged FP, and about half of these that I've seen have had lumpy rear bridges. Holes look off-center but are square, bridge has a lump on one side that cants the rear base.

BTW the very first Mk Xs were intermediate commercial Yugos, not many around though.

Its marked quite clearly. On the side of the action, with no thumb cut, it is marke all in Caps FAB.NAT.D'ARMES DE GUERRE HERSTAL-BELGIQUE.
The crest which has been drilled through is FN in fancy script in an oval. The action, barrel, stock and bolt all have the same number 115XX. The barrel is also marked MADE IN BELGIUM on the right side. The stock looked like it was painted with a brush but I could fix that. It even has a phony ebony tip on it. I was dumfounded. I just didn't take the scope off or look at the stock tip when I bought it. I stripped the finish off the stock when I found the phony tip. The checkering is flat. I will ge some pictures taken and posted. There are several men who have sent me a pm. I couldn't see past the price. This was going to be a dream gun when I got done with it. DW

This sounds like the most desirable of the FNs, an early example with the full C-ring and not the later H-ring. Too bad about the Bubbaing.

I know this doesn't mean a thing related to your early FN.

Just to add a little more on poor QC of some commercial mausers. There are a lot of Charles Daily and other unmarked Zastafas that are drilled poorly. These are not intermediates. Some are out of line, but most have canted holes. I don't remember if the unmarked Zastafas are pre or post Charles Daily. They are definitely post Mark X and also pre Rem 798.
