What should I use for scope rings?

I am having some problems with the rings and base on my Ruger 10-22. The rings are sliding forward a little bit with every shot. I cant seem to get the little screws on the side tight enough to keep it clamped to the rail. I have a Bushnell Sportview on it and I used the rings that came with the scope. They are cheap I know but if I can keep the scope attached to the gun. It stays on target. Who makes a nice set of rings that arent too expensive? Also, is there a way I can eliminate the rail set up that bolts to the top of the receiver?

Second question: Ive got that Savage 12FVSS ordered up and it should get here fairly soon, (a topic much discussed on the varmint and reloading forums) and I have picked out a nice scope for it, a 8-32x 50 job. Ill need a set of rings for that as well. Any recommendations? I believe Ill need taller than the standard height. I have a set of one piece rings on my 30-06. They are fine, but with this short action 22-250 I am not sure that is required. Additionally the recoil isnt all that much.

Thanks for any info

Dane V

For varmint hunting, unless you are going to be hunting at night, you won't gain enough with the 50MM objective to be worth the problems you will encounter with the higher rings required. You'll never have a good cheek weld and alignment will be iffy, especially at high powers.
A good 40-42MM objective lens scope will work fine for almost all applications with almost any set of low or medium scope base/ring combinations. Leupold bases should work just fine, also might check out the Burris Pos-align rings with inserts.
Check out the leupold web site, they have a chart to match rings and bases to your rifle.- Sheister

Dane,

I have a couple things you could try for the 10/22. 1) Replace mounts with a standard weaver-type rail (square recoil shoulders machined into the rail). 2) Remove mounting rail, and drill/tap for a small (6-40) screw in the mount bar just in front of the rear ring. Use the head of the screw as a "stop", but make sure to grind the screw off on the bottom so that the base fits flush on the receiver, and have at least three full threads engaged. Install the rear ring to just contact the head of the screw. There are also aftermarket receivers available with integral scope mount rails, but big bucks.

Good luck, Bill
