HI

I have recieved an 1917 action from a good friend and have had MANY thoughts on what caliber/ style of rifle I might could turn this action into??.
My new baby will be sporting a .240 Holland& Holland caliber, but I am looking for some inspiration from other rifles made on the 1917 action!
Is there anyboby out there who has any links for some pictures or possibly books on that?

Thanks Jens

WOW !

That`s the stuff I am looking for!

I have just talked the the guys at Blackburn,
and it shouldn`t be a problem to fit bottommetal from the Granite Mountain(which they also make). I have looked in Jack O`Conners book " the big game rifle" and there is a Holland & Holland rifle made on the 1917 action(beautiful).

Many thanks

Ideally the 1917 enfield (Winchester and Remington actions only) makes big bore sporters because of it's weight where one wants a heavier rifle to spread out recoil. Most are worked to things like .375 H&H and larger.

Be your own judge.....a 6MM caliber will be a heavy gun.....maybe that's what you want.

That is definitely the way to go if you want it done up all the way. I think I am right that Jack himself had a couple of rifles with metal work by Tom Burgess who did this one. I really appreciate the link, I looked for those pics two nights ago and couldn't find where I had put them, I resaved it and of course had to reread at the same time.

Jens, if the 240 H&H (I don't know that cart.) is a full length H&H case then you won't be wasting the action. It can handle much larger though if you are so inclined. I bet that full blown custom enfield's aren't too common where you live.

I liked the other link you posted Red, the one with all of Tom's fixtures and the making of the peep.

I just acquired a real nice barrel action (winchester) may have to pursue a similar project.

Z1R,

If you know the thread those pics are still on my site so should still show. I know what a dilemma it is, I am always looking for something I can sell to put into the Ultimate Enfield fund. Real hard one is that I have a great shooting 1917 Rem. that just begs for customizing. Smiler

The current and immediately preceding issues of Precision Shooting magazine have an excellent multi part article on the big .244 H&H cartridge.
