I have a 96 Swede action and am considering a 7x57 built on it. My question is this...Considering that the 6.5x55 head is .007 larger than a 7x57 head, will there be a problem with bolt face/extractor on the Swede? Or should I stick with keeping it a 6.5x55?

Actually the bolt face of the 96 is larger in diameter than a 7x57 by about .007, it doesn't need opened up. I was wondering if it is too large for a 7x57.

That would be a .0035 gap around the head, can't imagine it would make much of a difference but I'm no expert. I know that Brownells sell barrels for 96's in 7x57.

It will not matter for the boltface or feeding, but you would like to check the grip of the ecstractor, it can be to sloppy for the smaller'57, but does not have to be.

I'm not really sure why....the 6.5 X 55 is equally fine a cartridge.....leave it "as is".

Ditto checking the extractor. The bolt face should be OK.

Knew a fella years back whose only centerfire was a simple little sporter built on a Fajen utility stock and a 96 rebarreled to 7x57 with no changes to the bolt face or extractor. He reported no issues and plenty of game in the freezer.

I doubt it, since U.S. 6.5X55mm cases being made today seem to have the same head dimensions as the 7X57mm and .30/'06....

Run some 7X57 cases into a 6.5X55 die and trim to length. Then seat some 6.5 bullets and see if they feed.
