It works. Stylized "S" logo.
Pulling on the firing pin cocks it. Pull further until a taper lines up with the "receiver" cutout and the breach flips forward like a trapdoor Springfield. It has an ejector. Lemon cookies not included :-)

Unlikely a Savage.
How long is that barrel? Hope it does not have a rifle stock.

What you have is a cut down Deutche Waffen Werke (Ortgies) Model 1 rifle. The S is actually a stylized cat that was the Ortgies trademark. Made in .22LR and 9mm shot. There were two stock styles - full and board. Made between WW I and II.
