7x64 to 280 rem? with or without setting back
just thinking .. haven't decided if i'll change a thing, but..
can you rechamber a 7x64 to 280 rem (NOT ai) with or without setting back?

if i did change, i am 90% likely to seat back anyway ..

7x64 Brenneke - .280 Remington

As you see Jeffe, the 7x64 is a tad longer from boltface to shoulder, so setback is required.
It is also likely that the reamers have different dia on the necks , so a good rule is always to set back so that the whole neck is all new.

Thanks Bent

LOL.. norma brass for the 7x64 is 29,99 per 20 .. and loaded norma ammo is 35.99 per 20.

and HORNADY is making brass and loaded ammo... oh my, hornady loaded ammo is 19,99 per 20.. LOADED ammo...

its going to probably stay a 7x64

Jeffe,
Yes the 7x64 has the shoulder a touch forward but it is also smaller in dia at the shoulder. I layed the 7x64 over a 280rem cad drawing and 280 cleans everything except that outside corner. It falls .005" short. Sounds like you have a plan to stay 7x64. If you are interested I could draw it in detail. If I really wanted a 280 then I wouldn't let .005" stop me. An AI cleans it for sure.

As usual just my $.02

Jeffe:

Chamber-wise, setting the barrel back one thread would allow a standard 280 Rem reamer to clean up a CIP-std 7x64 chamber with one exception--the throat.

The 7x64 has the typical European long, tapered throat that wouldn't be removed unless the barrel were set back an inch. Likely wouldn't hurt anything as the rest of the chamber would be standard 280 Rem. and would accept factory ammunition.

Best regards,

Dave Manson

thanks Guys
its going to stay 7x64, unless i just can't "Stand" it not being a 280 ... the 280 has been on my list for nearly 20 years, and there's not much difference...

Dave

the S&B 7x64 ammo WAS cheap and the stepped bullets were very accurate in my old mauser.
