MJinesEjection Question
Maybe this group can help me diagnosis this problem. I have a Whitworth .458 WM that will eject fully loaded cartridges just fine -- if I load the magazine and then cycle the loaded rounds it will chamber and eject each one. However, it will not eject a spent round. The spent rounds will remain on top of the feed ramp. Is this a big problem to have fixed? What is the problem? Thanks in advance.

vapodogI had an interarms Mark X do the same thing and it was chambered for .257 Weatherby.....just left the spent case in the magazine for me to pick out.
If I worked the bolt hard it would throw it out!!!
Your 458 is a disaster with this problem where the 257 Wby was merely irritating!!!
I fixed mine by lightly relieving the narrow band of the extractor (diameter) that rides in the groove at the front of the bolt.
That allowed a somewhat tighter grip on the case and allowed for improved ejection.

Marc_Stokeldprobaby the extractor needs work. I have not shot many WHitworths or seen many at the range, but all of them I have seen have done this because of extractor issues. Including my own! The Whitworths are pretty rough as they come from the factory and need some to a good bit of tweaking. I am working on one in the shop right now and will work on or replace the extractor before returning it.

malmYou need to increase the grip on the case. The reason the loaded round works and the empty doesn't is more than likely because the extra weight of the bullet and powder places the case in a more forward leaning manner, essentially jamming the rim against the extractor more so than the much lighter, empty case. The extractor should hold the empty fairly tight.

jeffeossoLike the thers said, it's probably the extractor.

vanWhen cycling your bolt, cycle it real slow, and watch your case and see how it moves in conjunction with the extractor. does the case start to come out then hit the tip of the reciever rail, and drop it back in the follower. This can happen as well, either way it is your extractor grip on the rim. van
