I bought this rifle from someone here so have no clue as to the history.....I never fired it but assume it fired well when I bought it.

Headspace is good..."go" goes and "no go" does not go!

Firing pin protrusion is also good.....about .062

I added a Gentry three pos safety that may have reduced the firing pin fall somewhat.....sorry but I didn't measure before and after.

On a first attempt to fire the primer shows a light dent.....maybe .015 deep....I fire it twice more and the dent is enormous but the primer by then is dead....it won't fire at all.

I made a shim for the firing pin spring and .100 thick is all I can get to fit but it still don't help.

Do I need a speedlock type of spring for this?

Anyone with advice?

If you've got the original bolt shroud and cocking piece, remove the Gentry and install the old parts. Install and measure FP protrusion. Should be .055-.065. Then install the Gentry and measure. If it is short with the Gentry then you've got your answer as to the cause. Provided you have the Gentry shroud screwed all the way in, the only solution I can envision is to use a flat end mill to deepen the CP mortise in the shroud. If the FP protrusion is inadequate a stronger spring won't do anything but make it harder to cock. The FP won't go any farther than the CP will allow it. If it was short with the original shroud then you need to get a new FP. Also check the safety lugs on the FP shoulder to see if they are contacting the the shoulders in the internal raceway. Sometimes the FP can catch on these shoulders and deaden it's fall. One last cause that I ran into a couple of years ago was a loose fit of the shroud buttress threads with the bolt's. With the shroud screwed in w/o the FP spring, you could push and pull the shroud w/noticeable slop. This caused the CP to hit the inside of the shroud and push it forward, thus deadening the fall.

My first guess is that the clearances are causing the firing pin or cocking piece to drag somewhere. I've never installed a gentry, have used dakota and NECG. They work flawlessly, even with the slightly shorter firing pin fall.

I remember one Gentry coming into the shop I work with. It had a similar problem when the owner had tried to install it himself. I didn't work on it, but I remember the fellow who did had a couple of hours in figuring out why and fixing it. It might have been tight cocking piece in the shroud, but I don't recall for sure. I know it was more complex to fit than the Dakota or NECG.

Another thing to check is that the bottom of the shroud isn't dragging on the receiver tang and binding something up. I've had to take some metal off of the bottom of the shrouds to make them clear and allow the bolt to close correctly.

My thoughts too.....

I used a bolt assy from another interarms in this gun and it fires primers nicely....

Bingo.....I finally found where it was draging/binding and relieved it and now it's "banging" primers like popcorn.....

Thanks Dave.....
