Any Smith with a lathe should be able to handle that. But what about the sights or does it have any

How far are you from Fall River Mills? I have a friend who lives up that way that could do it, but I'd have to ask him first.

Standard radius. Although a target crown would look cool

Exactly what do wish to achieve by shortening the barrel? And what caliber is the rifle?

16.5" may not be too short but it could upset the balance of the rifle

I have a 16.5" barrel on my .44 magnum Rossi single shot - but it has an overbarrel suppressor that extends some 4 inches ahead of the barrel muzzle so effectively it isnt shorter at all.

This may not even be relevant to your request but .....

When a customer lets me cut my crown of choice, i use the 11 degree, but any crown will work if it is cut square to the bore.

thanks guys...I originally was thinking 16.5 due to a bolt action rifle I saw, but with no action on the H&R that was really short. I think 18 will do.

in all actuality 20" would be about equal to a bolt rifle with a 16" barrel. You loose or gain depending on how you look at it 5"-6" in over all length compared to a bolt rifle.

When taking a cheap H&R 1871 Ultra Hunter down to a youth rifle....what else would you recommend one doing?

Barrel length of no more then 24" shorten stock if needed. Although buying a youth length stock and just swapping may be better.

All of this of course is dependent on the build of the youth.
