I belive that this is true for te bolt guns but not for the 99 lever actions.

For many guns, reducing engagement is standard procedure.
I would be wary however if you are not an experienced smith that you do not endanger yourself by doing things in the wrong manner.
You need to be sure when reducing engagement that you make your corners nice and square.
An easy way to do this is by measuring your pre travel and say it is at 5 lbs. If after you cock the gun, your trigger measure 3 lbs then you are in trouble.
This means the sear and trigger are slipping and you may be in danger of a slam fire.
Just a word to the wise, the $45 you pay to a smith to fix it for you is a far lesser price to pay than if someone is harmed, especially if that someone is you.
