I am looking for a pair of Talley ultralight type mounts that are made of steel in 30mm for a 50mm objective.

On a #5 type barrel.

Does anyone make such a beast?

I think Echols does, but I was hoping for a factoryesque option. Under $300.

There is only a limited amount of weight that can be taken from mounts, with the ones I make, the height and weight is determined by the thickness of the mount between the bottom of the attach holes and the bottom of the mount. When I do a set, I try to leave about .040"-.060", depending on caliber/recoil, the rest is made up of the dovetail and recoil lug. The only other way would be to use aluminum, IMHO not an option, or some other lightweight, titanium maybe.

Don't care what they weigh, just looking for a tougher one piece option for a 416 Rem on a 9 pound gun.

My last 416 ate scope mounts like popcorn.

I just completed a custom pair to fit on a M70 in 458 Lott, 8-40 screws

Looks like you're wearing a huge scope, especially for a 416..to each is own, but there's no reason mounts cannot be made that will hold up...just don't expect to get them for $300.00.

I frequently use Suhler type claw mounts on heavy hitters, including 500 Jeffery..never an issue

Thanks gents.

Damn gunsmiths, always coming up with a $1200 solution.

I'll be in touch if I end up going that way.

I want to use a 2-12 VX6 on the rifle.

Will these steel mounts in 30mm hold up to the impact of a .416 RemMag? A guy goes through scope mount failure a lot with this caliber. His rifle is either a Mauser bolt or m70 or something along those lines.
Please advise.

Ray

The model/

V1B (1" low matte rings). Also available in medium, high & polished as well as 30mm – low, medium, high & polished

I know from working in the aviation industry that a good quality steel will be less likely to shear off than aluminum.

Reply from S&K. Not Talleys. But, probably lighter than Talleys. By the way, Duane Wiebe uses liquid electrical tape for extra grip.

Ray,
Yes our rings should hold up well for you... we do suggest using the Napa form a gasket sealant to lightly coat the inside of the rings... it dries soft to the touch. This is will secure the pressure and will hold nicely for you.
Thanks for your inquiry.

Subject: .416 Rem Mag Mounts Q

Would these strap type 30mm steel mounts hold up to the pressures of a .416 Rem Mag in a 9 pound Mauser style bolt action repeater rifle?
I have a friend in need and I always liked the lighter profile and weight of these in my non-magnum bolt rifles.
Please advise.

I packed a 416 Rem in a 8.5 lb. rifle and a 404 Jefferys all over Africa for 50 plus years. I used everyday mounts such as Weaver, mostly Talleys, but old Redfields worked great, control, Leupold and Buehler to name a few and never had a problem of any kind and Im pretty rough on a rifle..The hardest thing on scope and mounts is a horse in rough country, and everyday in a ranch pickup..

Your biggest problem is the size of that scope, it will give you problems IMO on rough hunt, in a pickup and won't fit a saddle scabbard..A big bore hunting rifle should have a 3X Leupold or a variable 1x4 or 1.5x5 at most IMO..and if its a real kicker a Leupold 2.5 compact is the only way to go..Never had mount problems except when I did something wrong, but scopes come apart on more than a few occasions, not bases and rings..Use 8/40 and glass or locktite on bases and if your peronoid use 8/40 on the rings if they allow it.

I don't expect to have problems with scopes and mounts until I get to the 458 Lott and up, an at which time Id suggest a receiver sight anyway. The big bores are not for long range shooting IMO, at least not on DG..Im sure from experience in Safari camp that the larger a scope is and the more it extends in front of the fron ring the more likely it will fail..
