I have a post-war Pre-64 Model 70 action that I am building a .416 Remington on. I would like to reshape the tang to look like the pre-war cloverleaf style. Any reason not to, and if you have done this, suggestions or cautions for proceeding? One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

I have reshaped a couple not true pre war style with hand files Earl Milliron style, no reason not to. Make a good pattern and go slow when closing in on the lines. I think they benefit from a reshape.

Matt Roberts a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild has a lot of good classic rifle building videos. One of them shows his approach to reshaping a M70 tang. Look on youtube under MNR. Craftsman

I suppose I've done a couple dozen or so. I believe I used a 7/16 cutter to match the radius, but I would have to go check (and I don't feel like getting out of the recliner!). I screwed a plug into the rear screw hole to use as a reference. End up with just a little step at the tang if the dimensions are the same as a pre-war, which mine are. After milling, I file for a little draft. Regards, Bill
