How would one open up a M70 classic to allow feeding of a 416 Rigby based cartridge? How much material can safely be removed from the front of the magazine well? Thanks, Axel

You don't need to go forward. In fact recent M70s in 375 already have the bolt stop position far enough back for 416 Rigby length. The bolt now stops about half way across the middle screw. One piece floor plate and middle screw gone, then longer magazine and you should be there, at least for length. Mike

You would need to do more than that because the floor plate on the current rifle is for a 3.6" magazine box. The metal where the middle screw goes would also have to be cut back as I think you will find the scew hole is still there with the one piwece floor plate models. Hey, Axel/ToddE. Firing a case full of Unique in your action will open it right up. Just make sure you have a good cheek weld when you squeeze the trigger. George

Axel, From you post about starting with a "300", I assume you mean a 300 Win Mag. If that's the case, you have a lot more to do than just lengthening the magazine. You need to start with a M70 Express action. Those are the ones that start out life in a caliber based on a full length 375H&H. If your's is a 300 Win Mag, it is not an express action. With your 300 mag, you will need to move the bolt stop rearward and have some metal removed from the rear receiver bridge to accomodate loading and ejecting the longer cartidges. You also have to drill new scope base screw holes and open up the bolt face. [ 03-30-2003, 00:58: Message edited by: David ]
