Savage M99 Rebarelling woes....

Gentlemen,

A while back I posted a question regarding my recently acquired M99A in .250-3000. The previous owner shortened the barrel to 17.5", and I really would like to find a replacement 22" barrel. Here lies the problem.....they are impossible to find. I have been able to find some other calibers, and I am trying to figure out which I should choose. I already own Model 99's in .300 Savage and .30-30.

These are among my options.

.358 Win
.308 Win
.22-250

If there are any issues which I am not thinking of (problems with feeding, magazine, etc.), please let me know

Thanks for your input!!

If you intend to change the caliber of your Savage you will have to obtain the magazine spool for your caliber of choice. Why not just have a custom barrel installed? Any decent smith would be able to duplicate the factory barrel contour for you. Regards, Bill.

Read an article a while back in Rifle about Ken Waters have a Savage 99 rebarrelled. He got his barrel from Douglas Barrels.

There is also "Pac-Nor", operation out in the Northwest. Can do current caliber, no problem. Great people to work with !

Gentlemen,

Thanks for all of the advice. I've contacted Montana Rifleman and Pac-Nor, and both seem to offer top-notch products and service.

You will have hell finding a proper cartridge carrier, so be smart and just have it rebarreled to a 250-3000, the original caliber and the best of the bunch anyway...

I have been trying to locate a .308 carrier assembly for a Model 99F for about a year and a half. The F model made in the 60's uses a different carrier assembly than the other 99's.....I have yet to find one.

Anyone can rebarrel a Sav. M-99, I would use a Lothar Walther barrel myself and be assured of accuracy...

Thanks for the advice Ray...I have decided to just do the .250-3000 route. It's the KISS principle. I may go the Ackley Improved route, but haven't decided yet. One way or another, I know I will have a hell of a rifle to hunt deer with.

Good move Joel, the std. 250 with its non existant recoil and killing power beyond its balistic data is the reason for its long lived popularity...On paper it equals or is a bit less than a 243 but I have used both and the 250 just plain kills game better than a 243 any way you cut it...I have seen a lot of elk killed with the 250 and it always amazed me how well it put them down. I have a good friend that shoots one every year and they just fall down and my dad shot 50 plus elk with as far as I know only one shot each..same with deer...I have shot half a dozen elk and a simi truck load of deer with it and mostly one shot each...It is an amazing caliber.

If I had to make a guess as to why it kills so well I would guess because at about 2800 FPS, you get perfect bullet reaction every time and the bullets integrity is never breached therefore penitration is always successful, whereas 3000 FPS may stress bullets from time to time.
