Action Screws, advise needed...

Right chaps, here's my dilema.

l fitted a new HS Precision (short tactical) stock to my Rem 700 s/a not long back and have been running load developement rounds through it. Now HS says 65"LBS for the action screws but Rem' advocate about 46"LBS for their units in a HS stock....So...does it really matter.
What's doing my head in is the fact that when the old gas pipe was in its lump of wormy wood it would put 87 v-max into 1/4" all flamin' day. But the best l'm gettin' now is about sub inch, and the 95 Noslers l'm wanting to run with aren't much better. BTW l'm currently using about 50"LBS, as each end of the scale seem to spread the rounds about the paper a bit.

What results have anyone else out there had with these stocks, as regards the screw tension

Dave.

Playing with the torque on the action screws can indeed have a large effect on accuracy, especially on stocks like the HS with bedding blocks.

Remington bottom metal is aluminum and that may be why they recommend a bit lower torque.

The best advice I can give you is to try some different torque settings and see what your particular rifle/stock likes. You already know what you and the barreled action are capable of so you certainly shouldn’t have to settle for less than that with the new stock.

You also might consider skim-bedding the bedding block so you have a perfect fit to your particular receiver.

Rick.

Thanks for the reply, l didn't want to go down the road of protracted developement, so l guess you're right l'll try it with the load l've got so far and see how it runs. The skim bedding may also be an option if l can't get any further with the screws.

Thanks.

Dave.

Dave,

I’m sure you will be able to find the combination that your rifle “likes†best and it will soon be giving you the accuracy you and it are capable of.

You would be surprised sometimes how just a little tweaking with those screws will fix the problem.

Good luck
