Glassbed scope base to shotgun barrel??
Can this be done using either Acraglass or any of the GOOD aerospace epoxies? The gun is not drilled and tapped and cannot be. I want to put a little red dot over the chamber of a single shot shotgun.

This might be a better way to get the red dot without possibly ruining an electronic sight.

How would epoxying a scope base ruin a red dot sight? What I would do first is match the contour of the underside of the (weaver-style) base to the outside of the barrel.

By falling off and hitting the deck.

There is a rubber based adhesive that is used to attach front sights and aftermarket ribs on shotguns, but I would think that the sheer mass of the electronic sight might cause the joint to fail at some point.

You might talk with Brownells tech department and see if they know of some type of epoxy that might hold up by itself. Maybe acra-glass will hold... Good luck.

blackmax is loctite380 or 385...
there is a stronger one, 480... www.mcmaster.com

but i don't think either is strong enough to take the pounding...

i did some expereiments with 480, 630, 635, and 638.

480 was the best after 24 hours.. i baked, which should be dunked in a bluing tank, the "heat to cure".. .it worked okay, but not well

Here's how it works.....If you splilled someepoxy on it you couldn't get it off no matter what.

If you put it there to hold something on, it would come off the first time you used it!...

Murphy's laws fit everyone without prejudice!

Try it and see what happens is all I can say. My guess is that it will work.

I did this to a 20 guage and it is still holding up just fine.

I used an aluminum scope rail made for a 10/22, radiused the bottom so it fit the barrel somewhat closely and used JB Weld. I meant it to be temporary because I wanted to solder a steel base on but it has been a couple years and holds up fine.

I did not scuff up the barrel at all, though I degreased the heck out of it with acetone first. I also made sure the JB Weld squeezed through the mounting holes of the base to help lock that in.

I set it up that way to be a turkey gun for my son, but it was used as a loaner slug gun this last weekend and worked good for that too. I never intend to shoot it enough to get the barrel hot though.
