The ACGG show is pretty small. Just plan to spend the better part of the day and enjoy yourself. The SCI show is HUGE. My advice is to decide who you want to visit, then mark them down on the map. The show can be mentally(and physically) exhausting because there is so much to see. Wanted to go to the SCI show till I discovered they charged such an outrageous fee to see the exhibitors. Why do the vendors have to pay for the booths and then the public has to pay such a huge amount to get inside? My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

22WRF I recommend this... Come to SCI, drop by the Heym booth I will be there introduce your self... Then plan one day for the ACCG show, it is real small, but it is "flush" with custom gun makers. If you go to Reno you need to do both... DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

That is pretty spendy. However, its really not much different than spending $25,000 on a 4 x 4, $1500 on a rifle and scope, a couple of thousand on lodging, $500 on warm clothes, plus another $500 on incidentals to go and shoot an animal that will provide one with a couple hundred pounds of meat that one could purchase for about $1000. In other words, after all of the expense of getting there (to Reno) and the expense of staying there, it would be foolish not to see everything for a relatively small outlay of $150. I am going to have to break my piggy bank.

I'll check my remaining airmiles and if they haven't all expired, I might go to the guild show or I might go anyway to check the engraving out. I will never go to any show that charges $150 to get in. I can get screwed for that figure by professionals and have fonder memories. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If a persons into guided hunts and quality bolt and double rifles, the convenience of seeing several providers in a day is appreciated. Echols,Miller,Famars,Hoenig,HartmanWeiss,GMA,H&H and other British makers, etc. For those that can afford or appreciate such, its cheap convenient viewing....cashed-up business people are often moneyrich time poor. If one wanted to go meet those makers in person outside the show, how much more time and money would it cost to fly around the country if not the world?

I guess I should back up a bit (and no, I didn't go to the Streisand concert whereever it was although I do appreciate her voice) but if there was a charity function or some show with an amazing list of comedians or similar that I would enjoy attending, I MIGHT pay $150 or more, but to pay what I consider to be an outrageous amount to get into a show where one goes inside with the basic goal of committing to spending large amounts of money with the exhibitors seems too much like highway robbery to me. I feel the same about the even more outrageous fees and extortions the exhibitors are exposed to, but that's not my problem. $20 for the guild show seems like a more appropriate and reasonable entrance fee. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. PS: I just checked, it's $105 for one day, not $150 but that's still too much. Let me be clear, I don't have any problem with anyone doing anything they want with their money, if they think it's worth it, more power to them and I hope they enjoy the show. I won't be helping create a crowd. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Gatogordo, Absolutely agree and that is the reason I will not attend. Not sure if I understand their motives but they charge the vendors and then they want me to pay me that much to get inside so I can find something to buy? It just doesnt make any sense. Get this...not only does SCI charge the Exhibitor for floor space which is of course normal each booth space only includes 2 staff passes. So if you have a booth and want have four staff work it...you have to pay an additional $250 or so per staff. SCI does lots of good work...but it is also pretty clear that they like to have a high dollar image and operate in a plush environment... Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Idared, there are no direct flights from NYC to Reno and minimum transit time is 9 hours, some combos are up to 12. One change. Year before last when I met you there a snowfall screwed up the return trip and I was pooped out by the time I got home, much delayed. I had a good reason to be there that time but no such this year.

Just received an email giving the menu for the saturday evening banquet. Top sirloin of beef with wild mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes, with selection of cheesecakes for dessert, coffee/tea. If you have a dietary issue with that you can ask for a plate of chicken or fish or no meat. But they do need to know in advance

Guys, Attending the SCI Convention is an expensive proposition, no doubt about it. However, it is a members convention, and is the primary fund raising event (by far) for the year for SCI. I'm sure that a minimum of 90% of SCI's income for the year comes from the Convention. When one considers that there is likely no place else in the entire world where one can visit and talk to the the vast majority of the icons in the hunting and shooting world, all assembled under one roof at the same time, the cost becomes much more justifiable. Is it worth it -- only you can answer that question. The Guild Exhibition, in town at the same time, is icing on the cake. For about the same cost as a ticket to a concert with a big name star and hearing he or she sing a few songs, you can actually speak with H&H, Purdey, Westley Richards, Hartmann & Weiss, David Miller, D"Arcy Echols, John Bolliger, and many, many others that are tops in their profession, and have your money go to support the best hunting organization on the planet. Yes, I know SCI is not without problems and there are no lack of critics. I frequently criticize them myself. However, until someone comes up with a better international organization fighting for hunters rights on a world-wide basis, I'll continue to support the SCI. Besides, it a hell of a lot of fun. See you there. Tom
