Can I Eliminate Slamfires in my SKS

I know many don't consider the SKS worthy of discussion. However, I have a Russian SKS that is alot of fun to shoot. I don't hunt with it, but it sure is fun for paper and plinking. Recently it has started to fire 2 to 3 rounds at a time. Not every time, but enough to raise concern. Does anyone have insight into what might be causing this? I was thinking maybe it could be rounds over max OAL, dirty firing pin, high primers. Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Shark Bait

Most likely it is the firing pin. Have had this problem myself. Just clean, use a pipe cleaner, and you should be just fine. One note of caution however, when reassembling the bolt, be sure that the recess in the firing pin is lined up with the extractor pin or you will lock the firing pin and it will go "full auto", or not at all.

I agree, they are great fun! Both my son and I clearly remember when we bought 2 sks's and a case of ammo for the present cost of 2 boxes of .416 Rigby and we had a great time all summer! But watch out for tree stumps! They can dangerous!

Gents,
it's either the firing ping, trigger job, or faulty assembly on the bolt.
If you have access, drop in a nother trigger group and see if it does the same thing.
Yep, they are the friendly, but ugly, girl down the block... fun to play with, but you really dont want your friends to know. what a HOOT to shoot.

If you're shooting reloads, try switching to some milspec primers. They have a harder/thicker cup and resist the inertial impact of the floating SKS firing pin better. If you're shooting surplus ammo, try a differnent brand to see if you can find a harder primer.

I haven't taken one apart to investigate, but you ought to be able to fit the firing pin with a denention spring to keep it from doing its inertial thing.

While disconcerting to have one "double" on you when shooting, it would be even more troubling and dangerous to have it fire when you release the action to chamber the first round, a possibility of which you should always be congnizent.

Stonecreek - You bring up an excellent point. I hope everyone considers where their barrel is pointed when they close the bolt on a round. If my SKS performed that badly it would stay in the safe or go to a Smith. As it is, I am afraid to use my Oehler in fear of hitting the skyscreens when the thing double fires. [Confused]

By the way does anyone know how hard trigger groups are to fit? Will that possibly cure my slamfire problem? What about milspec primers? Who makes them for reloading?

Thank Y'all.

Don't belittle the SKS or appologise for it. They are great little rifles that serve their intended purposes extremely well. If the firing mechanism has not been dicked with, the most likely culpret is a dirty and fouled bolt. If you shoot that Wolff crap like most of us do, it is extremely dirty. Disassemble the bolt completely, including taking out the firing pin. My bet is that your problem will go away once the bolt is cleaned inside and out. You may find the firing pin is starting to deform slightly if you have shot it a lot, so you may need a new firing pin if it is binding and not moving freely in the bolt, but they are very cheap to replace.

Thanks Big Bore. I keep this gun very clean and have only fired Winchester ammo and my own handloads through it. I also keep the gun very clean. I will check the firing pin. Sure is a hoot to shoot. Any favorite handloads?

Hey Shark Bait, I've got some GREAT NEWS for you concerning the chronograph. Back a hundred or so years ago, it was determined that it is not illegal to load only 1 cartridge in your magazine at a time! [Big Grin]

Concerning the MilSpec Primers, few Gun Shops carry them, but they can be ordered. CCI makes them and the numbers on them are different enough so that they are difficult to confuse with their regular primers.

MilSpec Primers:
Large Rifle = CCI 34
Small Rifle = CCI 41

By the way, I imagine the other guys are in all likelyhood correct about the Bolt Assembly needing cleaning. Semiautos of all types are bad about that.

Just be aware that getting "lubricant or trash" on the actual Sear Surface can create a similar condition.

And, If your trigger/sear engagement is shallow, holding the firearm "loose" can also create a multiple firing situation due to bouncing from the shoulder causing the trigger to re-hit the trigger finger. (I have a Sear from a "GunSmithed" 45ACP that will do that.)

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the feedback Hot Core. Boy do I feel dumb about the chronograph concern. [Embarrassed] Guess I didn't think that one through very well, huh?

Thanks Again!

Hey Shark Bait, Don't be too hard on yourself, we all do things like that.

Good luck with your SKS.
