I have a Mauser I'd like to have drilled and tapped for mounts (eliminate the original claw mounts).
#1 Will I need to have the safety reworked to have a scope clear it without using new high mounts?
#2 What would be a reasonable amount to pay for the safety and drill/tapping?

That would depend on what you're definition of "reasonable" is. Drilling and tapping 3 holes could cost you around $120.00, 4 holes around $150.00, and a simple low mount safety could set you back about $80.00 installed.

If you want to use the Mauser safety you will need it changed to one that will clear the scope. I install a Optima trigger with a safety and then remove the Mauser safety. The trigger is about $35 and the drilling and tapping about $50...........Tom

the rifle has a 2 trigger (set trigger) setup.

This is starting to sound like a nice rifle. I think you should calculate the loss of valve after drilling and tapping operation.

Yes indeed. If you have a Mauser Original with claw mounts D&T would destroy the value plus you you would be out the cost of the job. Can you post some pics of the action and mounts?

Drill and tap? What about the original mounts? was the receiver dovetailed as was sometimes done? Put one of the side swing type safeties on it for ease of use; so much better that one of the "flip-up/down" types.

Can you post photos of the action? That would help us help you with which way to approch this. Sure don't want to mess up a claw mount action.

The rifle was alredy rechambered to a 8mm-06 prior to my ownership, as I understand that has lowered the value already. Yes the receiver was dove tailed for the front claw mount the rear is screwed on. And yes it is a great rifle that shoots well with crisp rifling an near as I am able to with tri focals and open sights groups 1"@ 50 yds using 52.5 gr H4895/170Speer SSP/WLR

You would be much better off having a set of QD Claw mount rings fitted. That looks to be an original Type "S" Mauser. Hard to say for sure. Close ups of the SN & caliber markings would tell.

Nice rifle. I would sell it before I drilled that rifle.

Then sell it. You're not willing to spend $500 to have claw mounts fitted but you'll spend $300 to turn a $1500 rifle into a $500 rifle. Smart move.

It's not the $500 it is the waiting for over a year for a smith in my area to do the work!
There are exactly 2 gunsmiths within 50 miles of my home, I took a Remington Classic 338WM to one of them to have it pillar bedded...took him nearly 2 years to begin the job. took a vmdl 54 Winchester carbine to the other smith and he moved twice because of divorce, in 2 years until I was able to track him down and threaten him with a lawsuit if he didn't return the rifle.NOW you can see why I'm leery of letting this gun out of my sight!!

Again I'll recommend Duncan's in San Marcos CA.
Been in business since the sixties and Bud Duncan is not moving anytime soon. Reasonable prices and guild quality work. I believe bud is a member of the Stock makers guild And his shop puts out some top of the line work with in a reasonable time frame.

I've followed this forum for 'nigh on a few years now lurking in the shadows. Didn't take me very long to realize the finest artisans and craftsman in the US are on here, lurk here, AND answer questions here. Now, I understand not wanting to let a fine rifle out of your sight for any length of time...but I have one 'smith within 60 miles. And because of this he is swamped with all manner of stuff. It's not only a passion for these gentlemen, a labor of love, but it is their livelihood.

I'm not going to the only dentist in town just because of convenience and time (unless well I live in SLC, Takoma, CO, SD or where the dentist is one of the best in the area and the wait is worth it.) He/She is swamped with stuff. Nope, I'm going to go to reputable dentist.

I've only sent out on rifle to a wonderful company. Took 6 months. It was worth the wait. I am getting ready to send another one out. Why? Because quality work is worth the wait! And you've been answered what possibilities await you by the best gunsmiths, artisans, and craftsman on here...well, ok except me. I Just know which end is which. Oh, and how to clean one...I think. LOL!

You may be close on cost but I could turn it around in less then 90 days. Most of that time is in ordering parts.

+1 for Steve Button. Quality work and fast turn around! He fixed two Mauser barreled actions, installed safety and trigger in less than 6 weeks.
