Take a look at the muzzle (crown) check for pits dings etc. If there's any boogers have it recrowned. If the bore is shiney with sharp lands and grooves have the size checked(slugged). If it's dark and pitted, have it rebarreled. Good luck!

This would also be a good candidate to practice your epoxy bedding skills on.
It would definitely not hurt anything.

The idea of practicing your bedding is a good one. Prior to this, however:
1. Remove the upper hand gaurd
2. LIGHTY Hand chamfer the crown with a countersink.
3. Clean the peedidle out of the barrel for about three days. When you think it's near clean wire brush it and clean some more.
4. Really Tighten the forward action screw and loosen the rear screw till it just starts to be snug only. [Wink]
When you shoot it, if you see improvement than start the bedding. Some of the dark bore 8mms still produce better than hunting accuracy. [Razz]
Last month I witnessed an old 98 dark bore clunker shoot 6 round 2" groups at 100 yds. with Turk ammo.
Rebarrel only if don't want to have some inexpensive fun dicking around. If you're not happy-------rebarrel. [Cool]

I have to agree with Bartsche. I went through a few 6.5 96 mausers that shot alright but not quite what I wanted. First I recrowned them which helped but wasn't the total cure. I cleaned and cleaned but couldn't seem to get them totally clean. Finally I jury rigged an electro chemical cleaner that worked like the Foulout system and you wouldn't believe the 100 years of jacket fouling and gunk that got out of the bores. I would then clean with solvent then wipe the solvent out with brake clean and do the electro chemical process again. I went through this cycle three times. Finally the bore came clean and all barrels shot sub MOA. Try the foul out system or look on surplusrifles. com for the home made version.
