I have a CZ550 in 375 H&H and want to smooth the action myself.

How do I go about this, (without having to send it to a gunsmith) using readily available compounds etc.

Take a piece of 1/4 welding rod cut a flat on it and glass a piece of 180 grit stone on it...Make several of these in 220, 320 and 400....stick a piece of 3/4 dowell on them for a handle...Make them about 12" long..

stone the raceways, flats and ovals top bottom and sides, using an oil.. You can finish with emory wet/dry on erasers etc, whatever fits the surface again with oil...stone the bolt also where wear shows. stay off the lugs...you can finish by putting a cutting polishing compound on your bolt and working it 200 times, repolish with fine stones and clean it carefully getting all that abrasive crap out of the action..Do this with the bolt body disasembled...Oil.

Remove the firing pin. How to is described in the papers accompaning the gun. Remove now the bolt. Wipe all surfaces inside/ouside of bolt, firing pin, and inside of action clean, either dry or, if necessary, with gun oil. Now lube all parts who You think might have contact with something with a best quality gun oil. FP 10, Break free or ( later ) Rem oil.

Now cycle the action around 50 times. Try sometimes to push bolt slightly up or down on start of forward stroke. You will experience some binding, You will also find it improves with time.

Sometimes quick, sometimes slow, sometimes guide bolt handle down and sometimes slam just forward. Press trigger sometimes ( Yeah, I know, but it�s just the right word ) and let action cock.

Use a dummy for pulling trigger. If none at hand, use fired cartridges up to 3 or 5 times. Clean out primer soot after this!!

After this, disassemble, wipe totally clean and dry, coat with ( other ) ( Teflon ) oil and repeat. This need not be done in one day.

Reclean, lube sparingly with some lubricant and You are ready to go.

What Ray advises is the correct gunsmith�s approach. My version is cheaper and preserves the gunsmith�s time for things an amateur cannot do.
