I have a birch laminate stock that I would like to stain dark gray and re-finish with Tru-Oil... What type of stain should I use e.g., alcohol or oil-based? Aniline dye? Thank you...

I recently stained a Boyd's light birch laminate to a darker shade. I used plain oil base stain made by Minwax. One thing I noticed was that the laminate took the stain almost too well. It almost wound up darker than I wanted, but I was able to get it back off and out and lightened up before it dried using mineral spirits.
