Something to note if you are comparing the Global Mauser 98 to the 1999 Montana.

The Global is retail at $457 for a blued action, but the cost of an in-the-white polished action is $617!

The 1999 Montana comes in-the-white for $490.

I question a few things about the Global. Is there other ring manufatures that make rings for the dovetailed action? I do not want dovetails unless I have nice rings like Talley to utilize them. What condition in the metal in under thier blue? I will strip that off so the gun is treated all at once. Will it require a lot of finish metal work?

I think the 1999 Montana is starting to lead the pack. Not much comments on the CZ, the BRNO is a super pain to get into the US, and the Global is just got to many ifs. The FNs are great, but evrytime I see one I want to keep it in its original state, or there are enough changes I want to do to the action that the factory new becomes economical.

I guess I have the lone vote for the little husky or mauser 96. I have just about completed a pair of rifles for twin grandsons using '96 actions. I chambered them in 6.5x57. One has a B+C composite stock and the other was a blank from Calico hardwoods. These actions are smooth, tite and funtion flawlessly. These are my favorite for the lower pressure rounds. They polish and blue nicely and are not very heavy. My opinion only,Mark

I actually love the little 96s, but I am hesitant to build a complete custom rifle on one of these action when I will probably have as much into it as a commercial action in the end. I think i might be better served with something like a Montana 1999...Please correct me if I am wrong? As you can see these are sweet little rifles:

This last picture shows 96 and 98s

Has anyone found a Mod.70 three pos safety for a 96?

All it needs is a barrel and a stock.

What scope mounts fit the milled bases on these receivers? I would like to use different ones than those supplied my Legacy. I would lik QD like Talley.

Well Looks like I am really leaning towards the Montana 1999, but I like a more straight bolt handle like you see one the "Reno Accounting" Matched Pair rifles. I also like it not to have checkering. Where would I get one of these, or who would be the best gunsmith. A long bolt is my preferrence too.

330-OKH: how would you mount a scope on those rifles? I would hate to ruin a nice action like that with holes drilled into it.

Im new to mausers, but do you get a 98 with a handle like the rifle on the far left? I also like it when its kind of straight angled!

those handles do not allow for low mounted scopes/ They used sidemounts. They need to be tucked in closer to the stock.
