Another run to Trader Joe's, Jeeves, and don't spare the accelerator!} It is possible that W-R is worried about the unfortunate reputation that the .425 got because of the incorrect followers. Generally, the word in the bush (on the street?) has always been that W-R Best rifles with the clips are about as reliable as any bolt gun can possibly be and the company feels that their reputation is on the line. I remember talking on the phone with the U.S. rep when they were in non-Montana and his story was that it was the clips that saved the day. All the models without clips that W-R can repurchase are (according to my contact) re-outfitted with clips and resold. Probably at a comfortable profit! I report this only as speculation and hearsay, as my .318 was built by W. W. Greener.

The difference in terminal ballistics between the .404 and the .425 are purely academic. Both will drive a 400 +/- softnose or solid at 2350-2400 fps. The difference in bullet diameter is .011" so any allegation that one has superior frontal area is pure methane. In the original British factory loads, the .404 was loaded very gently, i.e., <2200 fps. This load is probably responsible for killing more heavy game than any other in Africa. However, today most us today prefer the German loads that basically equal the .416's. The .425 W-R has always done that. So, what is the "advantage" of the .425? Hardly anyone else has one, it's 'way cool, I want one, etc., etc., etc. Let us build and be merry.

Hey Alf, thanks for the great pics! Any chance that you have any pictures of the drop magazine box of the 425, hopefully some open. Trying to get a bette feeling for it. Wonder why I don't see that on more rifles, would seem like a good way to get extra rounds, but I guess a drob box ala Blackburn or somebody is considered to look better by most people. hmm.....

forgive the ignorance, but it looks like the 404 is more case capacity than the 425, do you know the difference? Is there a big difference in actual performance?

Yes, oh yes, oh yesssss! Some poor Afrikaaner is about to get skinned. Some day I will have to come up to Vancouver and visit it . . . and drool next to it. Phew! I can't imagine a more sensual experience (at my age, you understand!) than owning my own David McKay Brown. (fans himself with nearest sheaf of computer paper)

So many guns, so little money, that's why! In my case, and this answers Art's email as well, my first goal is a Pedersoli conversion. I really want a double rifle but I don't want to pay for a double rifle. So, since the rechambering of the Pedersoli has proven so successful on so many occasions, that is goal one. Then, next year, I have more need of a light. I am embarrassed to admit this but I currently don't own any light rifles. I have three (count them three DGR's but no light. Next year, unless one of you cheap types (excluding Johncharlienoak, gentleman and scholar that he is) decides to buy my buffalo crusher I will have four. This is dumb. Therefore next year's project will be a homebuilt 6.5x55. Only after that will I be in a position to buy a .425 'cause hardly anyone else has one, they're 'way cool, I want one, etc., etc., etc. Clearer now?

I can hardly believe what I read . How could you possibly go with the 6.5x55 for a light in preference to the 275 Rigby (or even the 256 Mannlicher) ? It's just not cricket ol' chap.
