Wednesday I bought a custom Mauser rifle that "tickled my fancy" I thought maybe you guys could fill in the details about what I have.

Action: Highly polished Mauser action. Top of large frong ring marked S/27 1938. There is a Nazi sytle "eagle " on the left side of the ring and the serial number 3XXX. The right side of the receiver has three of these "eagles" side by side. The bolt has a tiny "eagle" near the extractor. All serial numbers match. There is a turned down bolt and a commercial style safety.

Barrel: Removal of the barreled action revealed the words "Genuine SAKO Made in Finland" When mounted in the stock the barrel has .243 stamped on the left and "E.MCFARLAND" on the right side. It is a sporter configuration whith a standard hunting style crown. Bore is bright.l

Stock: Nice walnut, used but not abused. White spacers at grip cap and butt place. Butt plate marked "Bishop" Sling swivels not studs.

Other: No rust anywhere. Weaver style bases #45 and #46.

I took some digital pictures but don't know how to post them.

Guessing, but I should be close.
It's a late 50's early 60's gunshop sporter. Made by E. McFarland using:
1938 German built receiver
Sako barrel in 243Winchester
Bishiop stock

Whoever Mr. E. McFarland is I don't know, but he used some good pieces to put it together.

S/27 was an early JP Saur code if memory serves me. I'm at work & don't have my references to refer to.

I consider the McFarland book to be one of my best gunsmithing books.
He cracks me up with his make a sight dovetail with a hacksaw.
Still, he didn't write that book to meet any publisher's deadline. It reads like he poured a life's work into each chapter.

Actually I believe S/147 is a Sauer.
S/27 - 1936 should be Erfurter Maschinenfabrik
I have link somewhere... will see if I can dig it up.

Regards,
JAG
