As my handle clearly states, I am a huge .30 caliber fan. However, I do have something of a dilemma. I have a right hand, magnum length and magnum bolt face M1999 action along with a take-off post 64 Win Model 70 stock, complete with metal pillars begging to be brought together. My delima is in the department of cartridge choice. I have a .300 RUM that shoots sub .5 MOA so, it's not like I need another and I have a .300 WSM in the works when I receive my M1999 short magnum action. Thus, I have been thinking of stepping outside .308 and doing something a little different while staying in the "medium bore" catagory. I have been giving serious consideration to a .338 RUM as I have read a number of posts as to their accuracy. I have also given a little thought to a 6.5 x .300 Weatherby. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd go with the 338 RUM myself. After shooting my 338-06, I'm convinced that the .338 bore is the only way to go. You can only do so much with a .308 bore, no matter how fast you drive it. Move up a notch!! I think you will like what you find. maxman

If you want something different, maybe an 8mm Mag? .358 STA? .264 Thor? Just a thought. Lee Martin www.singleactions.com

I second a .375 H&H it truly is a wonderful round and recoil and power levels are great if you want to see true power build a .458 lott that is a round that truly smashes things hard. I would move up a notch from the .308's and I would make a significant jump past .338 bore to at least the .375 H&H level, maybe a .375 RUM would be an option. You have some good long range stuff now it's time to get a close cover rifle that hits like a freight train.

375 H&H is my vote. Got one about 6 mo ago and don't know how I lived this long without one. Blacktailer

Thank every for their comments. I certainly appreciate your thoughts. As for my big bore respondents, I have a Montana PH action on order so, I do have something in mind there: Option 1: A switch barrel .375 H&H; .300 H&H Option 2: A .404 Jeff. .338 RUM still sounds good and the .264 Thor/6.5 STW sounds intriquing also. I have a weakness for 6.5, too.

Please don't waste that PH action on the little H&H case! If you like those rounds, you should build them on that mag action. Save the PH for a big bore. Think Rigby case. Actually, just think 470 Mbogo.

For the .264 Thor you want to talk to this guy www.kailuacustom.com Mark Pinkston. Also there is the .264x300 Win mag. aka .264 Arnold.

Do you have any ideas about what you'd like to do with it? Or is it just another for the collection? I wouldn't use the 3.6" action on anything below 7mm, myself, and it seems you have the 308 arena covered. That H&H switch-barrel sounds like a sound idea. I'd either do a 338 or 375 on the H&H case (340 Weatherby, 375 H&H/375 Weatherby) or a 358, 375 or 416 on the Jeffery case (Dakota makes the 416, the other two are wildcats - J Ricks has my reamer for the 358). Those two would fit nicely with your 470 Mbogo.

the mrc mag will handle 404 and down... please don't waste it on a 404 or a 375hh based mag. In fact, my reserved SN is 470 !!! I may very well build a 470 mbogo off that monster,,, with an octagon barrel this time. for a long action, I'll suggest a 416 rem or, if you must, a 375 hh. for the PH, at LEAST a 416 rigby, all the way to a 577 trex jeffe
