I have a 7x57 custom rifle that has a very tight chamber. With Factory ammo is difficult to close the bolt. When I reload I can set the die down on the shell holder and push the neck back to fix the issue. I am also not able to seat bullets out very far befor the hit the rifling. While loading for the cartridge I am forced to stay near starting loads in the manuals unless I want sticky cases and flat primers. Would all this be solved by a little hand reaming? If so would anyone rent me a reamer and T-handle set-up to do this job?

Did you have the rifle made, or buy it second hand? You need to have someone check it out for you to see what is really going on. There is an incredible dimensional rang for factory shells and chambers. I have a couple of 7x57's and have found that ammo to vary more than others for some reason. How amny brands of ammo and brass have you tried?

You need to have someone check the headspace and the length of your throat. And could possibly need a chamber cast to be sure that the reamer was not too undersized. A slightly sub-SAMMI reamer is usually OK, but too much is not a good thing.

You DO NOT need to work on this yourself. Right now you don't even know what is going on, so cutting metal out of the inside of your barrel is not a good idea. But a simple check of headspace, throat, and a possible chamber cast will not cost too much.

You do not give your location, but you may be in easy driving distance of David Christman in Delhi, LA (NE part of LA). I would give him a call ay 318-878-1395. Even if you are not in driving distance, I think you should call him and mail him the rifle-most work these days is with people across the country anyway. David is the guy who taught me how to make guns, and I would still drive down there on the weekeds when I moved to the AR Delta. He can fix you up and is very reasonable in his prices.

Mark,
I bought the rifle second hand. The gun shoots fine so there is no danger at had...I just would like to be able to seat bullets out a little further and get the velocity with some other powders. I tried several brands of brass and factory loads...they all work the same. I can use factory ammo it is just a little snug to close the bolt. I do believe the throat is short because if I seat bulltes out very far the bullets are marked by the lands of the barrel. My thoughts were that a few revolutions with a reamer would clean this up a little.

I will stick with my original reccomendation-send it to someone who knows what they are doing and let them competently measure what is going on in your rifle. Then pay them to correctly repair it, if needed.

What you are proposing is a perfect way to destroy your barrel if you do not know what you are doing and do something incorrectly.

You would do well to take Marcs advice & get a chamber cast so that you have a reference point to start working from.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.
