Thats reciever is junk in my book,

Well it's my action and I know exactly what you're getting at.....but I did it for a reason!!!

Besides.....can you show me the math calculations to show a problem?......

If I build one for you I assure you the base will be foreward of this one.

sorry if i ask a dumb question - but whats the matter with drilling and tapping the front receiver ring?? I've seen lots bases put on this was for the simple reason that the owner had a compact scope and streching out the bases the scope wouldn't fit

Well, drilling & tapping is sure as hell not as bad as cutting a dovetail through the top of the receiver ring then driving a wedge-shaped scope mount base into the dovetail, as a lot of German gunsmiths have done in the past.....

Butchloc....this is exactly why I try to get the bases as close together as I can. Many of the untralight Leupolds are short and stubby and I prefer not to use the dog leg rings.

The theory is that the drilling of the rear hole should be in the bolt recess and not in the meat of the rear wall or weaken the rear of the ring by removing metal there.

In theory the drilling and tapping into the rear wall reduces compression area and thereby compression strength and increases liklyhood of setback. I agree that the drill should avoid the wall but cannot find a reason to avoid drilling a small hole in the rear meat.....as long as one diameter of metel is left between the bolt lug seats and the hole.

Yes...it does weaken the receiver.....but not to the point of inadaquacy.

The same argument applies to FN and Zastava cutting behind the rear lug seats of the front receiver ring to make room for the 375 H&H length rounds.....it definitely reduces strength...no question about it!.....but the action has been used that way for a very long time.....proof that the reduced strength is inconsequential.

Life comes with all sorts of tradeoffs.....

The red dot in this photo is where my rear screw is located and I'll argue that it's no where near as damaging to the front ring as the relief cut Zastava made on the 300 H&H magnum length action to facilitate loading the longer ammo...see yellow arrow.

The gov't of Colombia also made the cut of the yellow arrow on their Mausers when they converted many of them to 30-06 and they were excellent actions.....many turned to 300 magnums.
