Question:
It seems there are more .470 NE calibered dbl rifles than any other in the .45 or larger group. Further, it seems there may be more 450/400 calibered dbl rifles than any other caliber period. In the 3 inch version of the later I read the rim is .060 THICK. In the 470 I read the rim is .035 or .040 THICK, (for that matter, so too the .500 NE). In the 450 #2 and 475 #2 I read the rim is .080 THICK. With todays brass is the thin rim (.035 or .040) TOO THIN or perfectly adequate? Is the .060 thick rim of the 450/400 three inch the right choice instead? Is the very THICK .080 rim of the #2's the right way to go? If the world of rimmed cartridges was to start for the first time today, but you had all the past knowledge we all have available right now, and you were going to set the standard for N.E. BRASS especially RIM THICKNESS state your particulars. Please vote!!!

Choices:
.035 thick rim
.040 thick rim
.060 thick rim
.080 thick rim
Other

I load for the 450 No2 and the 450/400 3 1/4".
I have also loaded for the 470 and the 500/465.
I have had no problems with the thinner Nitro express cases. But I believe that the 450 No2 is the best case and the easiest to reload.
A combo of the thick rim and the definate neck nake it very easy to reload. Its only possible drawback is that you must use a filler with ALL powders in that big 3 1/2" case.
Also for the modern hunter the 458 bore offers the widest choice of bullets.
I have had excellent service with Bertram brass in 450 No2.
Also since the body of the case is larger than bore diameter, reloading the double is very easy and quick.

NE 450 #2,

What length would the 450 #2 case need to be, (2.5", 2.75", 3"???) to AVOID the need for dacron filler or what ever filler is being used, while giving 2150 FPS muzzle velocity and what barrel length?

If you reduce the length of the No2 case you reduce the internal capacity and increase the pressure. Not desireable in a double rifle. The Nitro Expresses give more velocity than the 458 Win Mag at less pressure.
Nost people do not use fillers in the 470 and the 450 3 1/4" when using IMR 4831.
You must use a filler with RL 15 however.

I have found it necessary to use a filler with all powders in the 450 No2, and I suspect the same is true of the 475 No2.

There is no problem with using fillers if they are used correctly.

I only load for the 470 NE in big rimmed cases. The ONLY problem I have had is case stuck in die from inadequate lube. Basically because I use 'One Shot' spray lube. For 470 and 416Rigby and 405 Win I use 'Imperial Sizing Die Wax' from E-Z Way Systems and have had NO more problems. I personally see no advantages or disadvantages for thick OR thin rims. My 470 is a Merkel and so has only extractors. I have NEVER had any case extraction problems but admittadly I have only fired about 150 rounds thru it. The only 470 brass I have is the original Federal which is nickeled and Mast Technology 'Bell Brass' which I like very much but don't think it's still available. No problem reloading with Reloader and Dacron filler and Woodleigh bullets. Perfectly duplicates the Federal loads.

You're obsessing about something that doesn't really matter because they're low pressure cartridges. A rim thickness of .040" is fine. So is .080". If you want something in the .450/.470 group, choose the rifle, not the cartridge.

Also, if an instrumental velocity of 2150 fps is important to you, I'd suggest that you get 26" barrels, at least. The standard ballistics of all of these cartridges range from 2100 fps to 2200 fps, all taken from 28" barrels, except for the .470, which was 2125 fps (not 2150) from a 31" barrel.

I doubt you will ever have any problems with the Rim separating. The only case failures I have ever seen broke about 1/4 inch above the rim. Keep in mind the diameter of the case. Even though the rim thickness may be a little less than found on a 30-30, there is still a lot more size to the case in a 470.
