Englander--

Turpentine works very well. I never thought of mineral spirits having another name in other countries.

Ask the clerk what is used to clean the brush that's been used in varnish. That will also work.

Englander,
If you go to market, and look at the tins of "paint thinner" you might be surprised to read, in subtext, that it reads mineral spirits.

This is the "generic" paint thinner... that is NOT a degreaser, as some kids found out when I was younger... they wanted me to overspary (paint over) their truck.. i told them to sand and tape everything.. drive over, and wipe down with laquer thinner... they showed up, drove into my dad's shop, and whiped down tihe "paint thinner'.... the paint came off in a week, from peelign in the wind to boils under it's own weight... I only charged em for the paint, afterwards.. and then next time they did as requested

Englander, mineral spirits is sometimes referred to as "varsol" or "stoddards solvent", and perhaps others. Since it is a petroleum distillate, "white spirit" sounds as though it may be appropriate.

Curley,
Varsol is another thing altogether, meant for cleaning car parts. It's got MS in it, but it's also got other, nasties in it.
