Installing the recoil lug on a barrel
I want to build 40 caliber rifle (404 or 416) and am going to do it piecemeal. I'll order the action and then when Wifezilla forgets about that, I'll order the barrel, stock, etc.
Just for my education, I want to know how to get a second recoil lug installed on it.
Should I order a full diameter barrel blank or a contoured blank? What do I specify from the maker?

I use to machine integral lugs and ribs into some of the octogon stuff I used to make "once upon a time", but now a days, it is just too time consuming and thus cost prohibitive for most folks, so now I find it easier and cheaper, when it is necessary, to simply build the lug separate, and attach it to the barrel.

CustomstoxMalm, that is what we (we in the sense that I was the mouse in Steve Nelson's, the metalsmith, pocket) did on the ACGG Guild Rifle. It was dovetailed into the bottom of the barrel.

The last one I did, a couple of years ago, was dovetailed and then TIG welded in place to make it 1 piece.
I decided to not put second lugs on my 404 Jeffery projects.

jeffeossothe dovetail is what holds the lug under recoil, ... if you solder, screw them on, or weld them, ON THE SIDES, it's just to secure it from side to side movement.
generally I don't put them on 416 rigby factory load levels and down .. alawys on 458 win mags and up ...
and one MUST on 600s, 550s, almost all 500s, and 470.

Over time, on a heavy kicker, the dovetail alone would likely loosen. The addition of silver solder or weld is to help assure that it doesn't.

Sure enough that could happen, as I normally either solder or weld them, but a 10x32 or 2 will hold them on 585 nyatis for years.... but heavy kicker is open to interpretation... a 416 rigby isn't, a 500 A2 is ...
i tend to draw the line about 85# of recoil.. but that's totally arbitrary on my part, based off shooting the big stuff, as my main shooters.

Thanks guys, I guess I won't worry about it with a 416 Rem or 404 Jeff and I'll order a regular blank.
I'll probably use the Accurate Innovations stock with the aluminum insert and a wrist pin so I'll check with them about it.
