I recently read an article regarding the making of a 358Rum based on the 300Rum. Does anyone have experience with this conversion? It appears to be better ballistically than the 358 STA. Does anyone know where the reamers can rented? Or purchased.?

Frank,

If you search around on the Internet under Ultracats you will finda place that has the reamers and dies for everything from 270 Ultra through to 458 Ultra.

However, if you are using a M70 or Rem 700 you would probably be better off with the 338 Ultra necked because it is slightly shorter due to cannelur positions on existing 338 bullets.

The same problem will exist if you use the 300 RUM case to 35 and use such bullets as the 250 Hornady Spire Point loaded to the cannelure.

Frank,
You may want to check out a cartridge my good friend Brian Smith made up.He esentialy made a short action Ultra Magnum (around 8 months before Remington released the SAUM)in 35 caliber.

He calls it the 358 RUM DUMB,because it's dumb in all actuality.

He's pushing 250s 2800 FPS from a 24 inch barrel and a 308 length action (an old Remington Model 600 to be exact). This would be a great cartridge to build in one of those VZ24s you like so much.

Mike, thanks for the info. I am planning now on which action would work best and will probably stick with the Remington as the bolt face won't require opening.
Brian, I think it would be great to have a round called the rum dumb. Send me your friends E-mail or give him mine and if he is willing I'll check it out.

Thanks for the info. I have contacted both and have to wait for replies.
I am thinking of sending my 375 in to Pac Nor and having them cut a new barrel with the same contour as my existing barrel so I can switch when I want. Then if I get really excited about the round I can get a new rifle and put that barrel on that action instead.
