Have you checked the inside of the can for rust? Ammonia and humidity is not a good combination. Hope thats not the case, but something to check out. Covey16

What Covey is saying is that ammonia absorbs moisture from the air. It is Hydroscopic(sp?), and your SC is likely contaminated. Kroil will do the same thing in time, a fact I just learned about to my great dismay.

In my shop there is an approximately half-full 1-gallon tin of Shooter's Choice, which I use to refill small "squirt" bottles that sit on my gun-cleaning bench. (One squirt bottle is mixed 50/50 with Kroil, the other is used "straight".) It was full when I bought it. This past week when I re-filled the "straight" bottle, the liquid from the 1-gallon tin was no longer a clear pale straw colour as it always has been before. Instead, it was a VERY deep brown, almost black, and definitely opaque. Nothing has been added by me to the 1 gallon tin, and I am the only person with access to it. Anyone have any idea what is happening here? The stuff still smells like Shooter's Choice. Is some sort of chemical break-down related to age occuring? TIA for any useful info... Alberta Canuck

If you open and close it or leave it open for a while when cleaning a few guns, over time it will go dark. I have a large bottle of Butches that has oxidized the same way. Now I only open the large "mother" bottle for a few seconds to fill a small dispenser and close tightly immediatly, store it in a cool dark place, no light. I'll use the small dispenser for cleaning my guns and always have a fresh potent supply in the mother bottle. I liken it to a large bottle of soda, or beer, if left open it goes flat pretty quick.
