Can the chamber of a 300 svg be reamed out to 308 win?

JBrownI don't know the answer, but IIRC the Savage is slightly larger or longer at some point in the case.
But the 300 Savage is a real cool round. I would think hard before changing it to 308. But that's just me...

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry

ForrestBPerry, just don't tell anyone it's a minty pre-64 Model 70 you're about to re-chamber.

kcstottDepends on the chamber but in most cases not as the shoulders just about start at the same spot and they are very close in size. So they might not clean up. You could set the barrel back a bit and rechamber

jeffeossolikely, though might require a thread set back .. but WHY? use h335 or varget, and there's no meaningful diffference

perryThe purchaser, my buddy, does not reload. He is looking for a wood/blue 308 which we have discovered is pretty hard to come by. They all seem to be tactical. I found a M700 classic in 300 svg and thought about having it turned into the 308.

GatogordoYou've got to be kidding me. Wood-blue .308s hard to come by in 700s? If he wants a used one PM me.
He might consider the Savage 14 Classic in .308. It has a better trigger and likely will be more accurate than a 700. Easily available for less than $700 NIB.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

If this is a Savage M-99, I'd strongly recommend against this as the M-99 in .300 Savage may not be strong enough for the increased pressures of the .308 Winchester.
For just about everything else.....yes!
I had a Rem 722 at one time that was in .300 Savage and was considering this same thing but I was able to trade it for a Rem 700 in .308 Win. even up....both of us believed we came out ahead!....LOL

Perry,
I think so.
Looking at drawings of each - The Savage is 0.447" diam. at a shoulder length of 1.558" and the 308 Win is 0.454" & 1.560" respectively.

J.D.SteeleIn the past I recall seeing this specific rechambering job advertised in several smith's pamphlets, at a somewhat lower price than their normal rechambering charge. So apparently at least some smiths did it successfully.

ramrod340Well I'm to lazy to draw it out. But asking Ammoguide in the rechamber section the answer it gave was:
Yes, based on your settings, you may be able to ReChamber your .300 Savage firearm to .308 Winchester (7.62mm NATO).
As usual just my $.02

Take it you are working with a bolt action. If so the conversion should work. If you are working with a Savage Model 99 this conversion does not work as the magazine of the .300 is to short for the .308.

I believe the classics had 24" barrels. If he's not worried about a shorter barrel there's plenty of 22" take-off's floating around. Just get one of them and have it installed/headspaced. The classic is probably worth a couple of bucks more than an older BDL so should be no problem to just trade up for one already set up for 308.
