Can a stainless steel barrel be refinished/blued to match a carbon steel Mauser reciever? I have a good barrel I would like to use on a project, but want a, nice semi-matt blued finish. I dont' know if stainless can be blued and I have not seen any of the teflon type coatings that show what I want, but I probably haven't seen them all. Any suggestions or pictures?

There are some methods to “blue†stainless, but making it a good match for blued CM ain’t going to be an easy task.

I’m sure there are some guys on here with lots of bluing experience that could offer some help and/or suggestions.

Bluing on stainless is supposed to come out like the grey barrels and actions on Rugers VT models...

I like the look of a parkerized barrel, which has to be done on chrome moly...

I have one new barrel now, that is chrome moly that is going to make a trip over to the gunsmith for that...

The last stainless barrel I had blued turned out just as black as the chrome moly receiver.

The stainless has to be pickled in acid before being placed in the bluing salts. That is the extent of my "knowledge".

Remington did it for years and it looked good, but I have no idea the process they used. Seems Brownells had someting but haven't looked at it in a long time.

Well, I spoke with a tech at Brownell's and they do have a product for bluing stainless. It is a hot tank process, which I don't care to do myself, so I am going to have to find someone who does it if I decide to go forward with this barrel.

Bill, care to share who did your barrel?

Several years ago I had a S&W stainless 45 auto "blued". Came out a very pleasing almost black color. Had the same durability as a regular blued gun.
You might try some of the other types of coating like teflon. They have various colors and maybe can match CM bluing a bit better.

Northwest bluing did the barrel. I had it all polished so all he had to do was blue it.
