In a Yugo M48. A 284 Winny or a 7x57 Ackley?Which one would you go with & why.284 Win.7x57 Ackley Imp.

Well I voted for the 7x57AI only because you didn't list the 7x57. I have just never cared for the 284 case. Many do I simply don't.

I would build a nice 7x57. On paper you will see huge gains shown for the 7X57AI. But those gains are compared to factory loaded to 51,000psi. My wifes 22" 7X57 shoots a 140Accubond at 2825fps measured. Brass is on it's 5th loading.

The 100-150fps you give up campared to the 284 your target will never notice.

Yup.....I agree but I'd first check to see if the 280 Rem will fit in the magazine.

It would be interesting to see one of the 'smiths post addressing the possibility of feeding problems with the rebated rim on the .284.

The 280 is too long even in a standard 98 action with 160 gr bullets seated out correctly.

I want more velocity than the 7x57 can give within normal pressures.

I went with 7X57 imp because I don't like tweaking mauser rails and boxes. The imp won't feed as slick as the standard X57, but it'll be less work than a .284.

Besides, on a mauser action, a .284 just seems wrong vs a 7X57

Doug-

I voted for the .284 and my reasons come purely from a reloading perspective.

Fire forming brass is a pain in the butt; plain and simple.

I had a 7x57 AI. It is a great cartridge, but you have to fire form brass for your full power loads which is why you want an Ackley Improved to begin with.

I still like tinkering with wildcats especially if I am necking something up or down.

With the .284 you can load it and go.

If were gonna vote on it, I'll have to go with 7X57. Less hassle getting it to feed. Now it were mine I'd stick with the 7-08, no fuss no muss, velocity increase is marginal in my opinion and not worth the hassle. Have a Nice Day

I voted for the .284 because I imagine Doug has a whole safe full of 7x57's and would want something different just for the hell of it.

Doug-

One other thing regarding the .284 Winchester. I would make it a long-throated .284 so that you could seat your bullets futher out giving you greater powder capacity.

I would think that action would accomodate the longer overall cartrige length.
