The Vz.24 and Persian 98/29 have a lower band tightened with a screw with a locknut on it that's round, smooth sided with a thin split slot in the top, straddling the screw. I had a stubborn one that I ruined in removing after several days of trying more conservative methods. Anybody got an extra, or know of a source? Or for that matter, what the threads are so I can hunt up another sort of nut for it? The thread pitch of a 10-32 seems to match, but a 10-32 nut is a little too small and won't screw on, neither will an M5-.8. Were the Czechs using BSF screws and nuts on their stock hardware in the '30s? And who's got the proper tool for removing these things for sale? I hunted all over Brownell's and didn't find it. from what i've been told they used english threads and measurements. brownells had thread pitch gauges and the screw size checkers, threaded. PLEASE EXCUSE CAPS, HANDICAPPED TYPIST. Turns out this is a B.A. #1 thread. The band screw is a "cheesehead" #1 x 3/4". A regular hex head B.A. #1 nut works perfectly, and is far easier to work with than the slotted smooth round one the Czechs put there. The 3/4" long screw almost, but not quite, fills the threads of the nut when installed. I had to order a fair number to meet the minimum order at British Fasteners, so if anyone needs one or a few B.A. #1 x 1" cheesehead set screws or plain steel hex nuts, drop me a line. Just got done putting the Persian back together after relacquering the stock. (The original stuff had been turned to soft sticky gum.) Rubbed it down with oiled 0000 steel wool and waxed it so it's glossy, but not glassy. Antique furniture look, not a new Weatherby stock. Looks great! I'm really looking forward to shooting it!
