I got a great deal on a Winchester P17 in .300 H&H today. All of the hard work on the conversion has been done, leaving little cosmetic things and a conversion to cock on opening. The sporter stock is for a flat floor plate but it still has the pot belly floor plate. Does anyone know where I can find a flat floor plate? How about a classic style replacement stock. The stock that's on it is ok, but I'm not a monte carlo fan. Thanks for the help guys.

The pot belly bottom metal is usually corrected by cutting and welding the original. I imagine any of the gunsmiths on this forum can and have done this conversion, it used to be common as dirt. If you are looking for a classic style semi-inletted stock, Great American Gunstocks is the only one that comes to mind offhand. I have not done an Enfield in many years so I don't know who does what anymore.

The floor plate straightening is really easy. It is a straight cut, a little grinding and a quick weld.

Any local gunsmith should be able to do it, or you can if you have any welding experience. I just checked two online websites for gunsmith's I have used, and they both quoted $60.

Forgot to mention, but if you are trying to do this inexpesively and the wood is decent, I have (and seen) several old rollover stocks converted to classic style by simply taking the top down to the comb line and taking off the remaining rollover section on the right side. This will generally work if the rollover is one of the high styles to start with. Just go slow with the reshaping, and you can often end up with an attractive stock.

I might try to reshape the stock. It's in decent shape except for the horribly fitted Ruger recoil pad and the flat bottom stock mated to the potbelly trigger guard.

Many folks like to make the action profile shallower by reducing the magazine capacity, really easy to do on the Enfield simply with a few hacksaw cuts. Use a 1903 Springfield trigger, it will be the proper length for the shallower line. Several aftermarket suppliers used to offer Enfield guard screws at various lengths but I don't know the status these days.

Most of the better-looking conversions I've seen have used the shallower box but for a Magnum IMO you would want to retain the full depth.
Regards, Joe

I have a Rem 1917 thats fitted with the 1903 Springfield trigger guard, all that was done was change the angle of the rear guard screw.
Slims it down quite a bit

I, too, have seen quite a few Enfields with 03 floorplates. Conversely, people doing 03's always loved to change to M98 floorplates. Now if only people building big bore 98's would switch to Enfield belly floorplates, the parts problem would be solved.

Dennis Olson straightened an Enfield floorplate for me years ago and added a Winchester style floorplate release. If he's still working I would definately recomment him.

The bottom metal is also too wide for my taste and can easily be trimmed; I ground the two side rails of the floorplate paper very thin and silver soldered the magazine box to it. Narrow the floorplate to just a touch of overlap and it looks dramatically better.
