I picked up a Whitworth .458 recently and where the crossbolt goes through on the right side of the receiver it is recessed. I am told that it is normal but to my uneducated eyes it looks unfinished or as if something is missing. Right side: Link to full-sized picture Left side: Link to full-sized picture Is something wrong here or is it all fine? I will be taking the rifle to the gunsmith before too long to get some work done (bedding, new safety, etc.) but want to try to resolve this in my mind first. Thanks for any help.

Cross bolts are normally recessed to one degree or another to allow for shrink and swell or so I have been told, but that makes since to me..I guess... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I own 3 Whitworths, and on mine the both sides of the crossbolt have the finished look like the right side of yours. Geronimo

for the love of Pete....the one side is botched up and anyone with one eye and one asshole can see it. Lets replace it when it goes to the smith. Brownells has them in stock. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Now if you have two of each... The gunsmith will no doubt fix it up. I appreciate that I am not the only one who thought something looked wrong. I guess the real question is whether something happened from the picture I had before: or if it was just the lighting that made it look the same as the other side.

Thanks. It has some nice figure in it, but is not consistent throughout. Nonetheless it caused me to probably overpay for the rifle. That's okay because my wife underwrote half as an early birthday/Christmas present.

a little unsolicited advice.....that floor plate release in the trigger guard is easily hit with your finger during recoil and dumping all the magazine contents on the ground. Ask your smith to advise you on alternatives. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
