I've noticed in some ads for new guns they specify "Case Coloring" rather than specifically "Color Case Hardening".

Is this just a lost in translation thing (It's an Italian company)or is there a finish that looks just like color case hardening but is actually a cost cutting shortcut. I imagine there is, I just wanted ask the more knowledgeable people also.

There are several types/methods of case hardening
pack hardening in which the items are packed in wood and bone charcoal and heated. this is the method done by most custom gun makers
cyanide hardening this is more of a production type process. both typically produce colors as a byproduct of the hardening. the depth of the hardness is controlled by the time and temperature of the cyanide, or pack

There are some new guns where it's 'painted' on !!!That won't last long .
Yes you can vary time and temperature and use various processes. It will also depend on the type of steel.

I think it's done with carburizing gas, also.

Agreed; too, case hardening is not necessarily color case hardening, but that's not the topic.

I'm rightly corrected by you as to my response to your original post, thank you for bringing it on point.

There are proprietary chemical processes that will leave a color case finish. Not as vibrant as true CCH but nice. Now as for whom does it???
Ruger does but only to their guns.

I'm thinking back when I was a kid, some of the break open single shot shotguns, like a kid's first .410, had a color case applied to them, chemically. Like H&R, or similar, made them. I remember the kid across the street had one, got it for Christmas, had the coloring, and a plastic trigger guard.

For great work, check Doug Turnbull to have it done.

I have used Turnbull in the past; a bunch of ACGG guys do it also. I saw an action and assorted parts done by Dave Norin at the DSC show that was spectacular!!!

I'm not looking to have any done, however, Turnbull would be the first choice.

I was looking through the products of a manufacturer and noticed that they say CCH specifically on every gun but one, on that one they say Case coloring. So it made me curious.
