7600 ? ( long sorry)

I have a couple questions on a 7600 I picked up the other day. It had a 22" barrel on it . The crown was machined off center and I wanted a carbine anyway so I shortened the barrel to 18 ½â€and re-crowned it. I have access to mills and lathes and over 25 years in machine shops so I’m comfortable with the machine aspect of gun smithing . I got the disassembly info from a book by M. L. McPherson called Accurizing the factory Rifle. I was surprised there was no pinning system to provide a better barrel receiver alignment . He recommends using loctite 609 matting the barrel to the receiver when reassembling it , there was nothing on it from the factory. I haven’t done this yet as I’m not sure if I’m done with disassembling it yet . With a $40 bushnell 4X scope the first groups were 1.5 “ at 100 yards. However after adjusting the scope to center bull shot 1 was on the bull shots 2 & 3 were 1 inch apart 8 “ low. I assumed the receiver and barrel are settling in or the scope had a hick-up . So question 1. Is .

Do you use anything to adhere the barrel to the receiver and is this a issue with the 7600 ?

Issue 2 is when I bought the gun , it’s a synthetic , the forearm wasn’t aligned very well . The action worked very smooth but the of the end of the left side of the forearm actually rested against the barrel . When I disassembled the rifle I noticed the Action Bar Assembly wasn’t very straight it appeared to be welded slightly off , one side longer than the other , also the whole assembly had a curve to it . I tried a couple things to straighten the forearm externally but finally decided that by slightly bending one side of the very end of the action bar assembly the forearm would be straight . It was but then the action was binding after a lot of messing around I decided to start over . I straighten the whole thing so it was as straight as I could get it, ground off and polished the high spots that were binding . Bottom line is the forearm alignment is much better the action is about the same but there seems to be a little more side to side play in the forearm . More annoying is that it seems to rattle a little more. I know they rattle a little and this one may have been rattling this bad before I’m not sure I wasn’t paying that much attention. One thing I noticed when I was straighten it was that the slide arms seemed to bow , although they bowed the same direction , and the slides angled very sightly out at the bottom if you looked at the assembly from the end. So question 2 is.

Is there suppose to be a slight bow to the sliders to aid in stabilizing this assembly and if not what do you do to quite the rattling ? Sorry for being so long . Thanks KH.

Welcome to AR.

I've hunted with a Remington 760 for over 30 years. The slip fit between the receiver & barrel extension is so close that I have to question wheather that the wee bit of loc-tite that could squeeze in there would be of any benefit. I guess that it wouldn't hurt unless you needed to disasemble the rifle. Mine has always been very accurate. First trash that cheap scope & get yourself something better. Get a new action bar from big green & replace that crooked one. As for that rattle mine does that also.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I have a 50's 760 in 30-06 and a 80's 7600 in 35 Whelen. Both these rifles shoot 1 to 1 1/4 5 shot groups at 100 yards with best handloads. My guess is that your grouping problem is related to the low cost scope, try another and see if that fixes the problem. As far as the rattle in the forearm, both of mine have play and flex in the rails when I work the action with authority. I think it is just part of the design.

Thanks for the responces .I guess my post was running so long I didn't mention that the scope is just a throw on to see if the gun would shoot . I want to try a Simmons master series on it . I have leupold on all my other rifles but this one will not be one I use often so it might be a good one to try the simmons on . thanks again KH
