I'm thinking about putting together some rifles for the kids. They are old enough to go through the process, and I'm finally getting a lathe that can chamber barrels. I'm thinking about making them switch barrel rifles, 22-250 and either 7-08 or 3-08. Because I'll be using the shorter rounds I'm not adverse to the Yugos. I'm also thinking that a complete gun might not be a bad way to go as the issue stock can be cut down to fit them now, and a decent stock made when they quite growing.

Paul, for a switch barrel rifle I'd seriously look to Savage as you can change barrels easily and the cost of a finished rifle is far less than the cost of a "tricked out" Mauser action alone.

Get the kids a Mauser when they mature and appreciate a fine gun.

thumbI've spent many happy hours working on Mausers; spoterizing, changing barrels, chambering to 8mm-06, and modifying the stocks.

That said, the last 3 Mauser actions (6years ago) I got from Sarco were just useable and not very pretty.

Resently in this area the Big 5 stores have been selling desent Yugos for $100.00. That would give you metal and wood to to play with.

The other option, as previously stated is to go the Savage route. I've bought 4 (Stevsens) this year and two extra Shaw barrels. All four were MOA or better. I think to make the stocks shorter may take a little doing but can be done. The triggers most definitely can be modified to give reduced trigger pull. I don't know what they would cost you in AK but the last I bought were $279.00. But than you won't get to exercise that lath. lol thumbroger

Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

I called Sarco on the actions on their website, and they were out of all of the serviceable ones.

Samco has the Persians, but they're kind of expensive.

If you want a CD action Ron Skirk Shooting Supplies still has some 7 X 57/30-06 size in stock. I just got one from them this past month. The last listing shows $229 dealer price.

Is Century still selling the Turks? Last time I checked, which was probably five years, they were about 4/ $100.
