I have ordered my 3x12-56 scope and now am looking for a set of 30mm weaver style rings and do not know if I need high or extra high. I am mounting this on a Remington 700 short action.

Do yourself a favour and order both sets on a "sale or return" basis. There are so many variables including how far forward or back you slide the scope in the rings, it is far easier to try them....I went through this on a couple of 50mm scopes and both times I got away with mediums in stead of highs...Also one brand of high rings may not be exactly the same height as another...If you can't take the rifle and scope into a shop with adecent selection I'd order a couple of different styles on the understanding you'd keep just one....
